GRADUATE STUDENT CO-HOUSING - RISD DEGREE PROJECT
2005 Rhode Island School of Design
This conceptual project was based on Centrifugal and Centripetal forces... At the outset of throwing a pot on the potter’s wheel, a constant centrifugal force is applied to the clay body. The hands then use centripetal pressure to pull the vessel upwards. The surface of the resulting form records the interaction of these opposing forces.
A building becomes an architectural centrifuge as it grows vertically in an urban context. Its structure and form move from a state of regularity to eccentricity. It also responds to other conflicting forces that generate further deformations. On the exterior, the architecture reacts to site and adjacencies. From within, it negotiates circulation and program.
